Let's not blame the SNP for everything

There's a growing myth that the SNP are the evil cause behind everything bad.

Why did Labour lose so badly in the general election? Because of the SNP's evil influence.
Why is there Scottish-English rivalry? Because of the SNP's evil influence.
Why did Charles Kennedy die? Because of the SNP's evil influence.

No longer do we have to cry "witch!" when we can cry "SNP!". This new superstition is gaining a foothold and we should do our utmost to bring evidence and reason to these issues.

Personally, I am shocked and saddened by the death of Charles Kennedy. He was one of those figures everyone liked and respected. We all know he had a drink problem and it is human nature to speculate if recent events 'pushed him over the edge.'

But complex psychological problems cannot be solved by a simple 'blame the SNP' mantra. It was clear prior to the election that Charles Kennedy was likely to lose his seat, so that would not have come as a shock to him. He would have been mentally prepared.

We also know that Willie Rennie, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, had spoken to him after he lost his Westminster seat to suggest he stand in next year's Holyrood elections. There was also the in/out EU referendum "before the end of 2017" to look forward to participating in. It was clear that losing his Westminster seat was not the end of politics for Charles Kennedy.

Alistair Campbell has also revealed that he and Kennedy had been friends for over 30 years and that part of the friendship was based on their shared battle against the demon drink. Although recent figures showed a drop in alcohol-related deaths, Scotland is still a nation battling its relationship with alcohol.

Whatever happened to Charles Kennedy - and, at the moment, the cause of death is unknown - it is more likely that the previous decades of his life contributed far more to his death than the recent SNP surge ever did.

Let's hope science and reason kill off this silly SNP superstition. Instead of thinking 'blame SNP,' let's turn our thoughts to the family and friends who will be suffering so personally.

  1. It's a myth perpetuated by Unionists and the media. They won't stop.

All the SNP can do is govern as well as they can and hope reasonable people don't believe the propaganda and the media spin. Eventually the cognitive dissonance of a well run country and the 'SNP bad!' mantra will break; but each person has their own tipping point for media bullshit.

The 'SNP bad!' mantra is about fear and power. The fear is that the SNP will take away their power and influence and put it in the sovereign hands of the Scottish people. And they are right to be scared because that is what is going to happen.

The lie that the SNP is bad and the constant repetition of this refrain by Unionists is straight from the Joseph Goebbels playbook:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Thus the forces of British nationalism are writ large in trying to maintain the lie.

  2. There's also the 'cry wolf' issue. Eventually the SNP will make mistakes or have an internal problem. It might take 20 years, but it will eventually come.

After all we have seen over the past 18 months, "SNP bad" won't be believed when it actually is true.

  3. Good points. Scared to think truth is an enemy of the state but glad to think SNP can survive genuine mistakes :)
